VA C&P Exam: 7 Tips to Prepare and Succeed
"Your C&P exam can determine your rating. Learn what to expect, how to prepare, and 7 proven tips to ensure the examiner captures your true condition."
━━━THE VETERAN'S TAKE━━━
What Is a C&P Exam?
The Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam is the VA's way of evaluating your claimed conditions. It's conducted by a VA healthcare provider or contracted examiner, and the results directly influence your disability rating—and your monthly compensation.
Many veterans walk into their C&P exam unprepared, and it costs them. The examiner has limited time (often 20-30 minutes per condition) and must document their findings in a standardized format. Your job is to make sure they capture the full picture of your condition.
What to Expect
During a C&P exam, the examiner will typically:
- Review your medical records and claims file
- Ask about your symptoms, treatment, and how your condition affects daily life
- Conduct a physical examination (for physical conditions)
- Perform range-of-motion tests or other standardized assessments
- Document their findings using a Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ)
7 Tips to Prepare and Succeed
1. Know Your Symptoms Cold
Before your exam, write down all your symptoms, how often they occur, and their severity. Bring this list.
2. Describe Your Worst Days
Veterans often downplay their conditions. The examiner needs to understand your condition at its worst, not just how you feel on a good day.
3. Don't Be Stoic
If the examiner asks you to bend forward and it hurts at 45 degrees, stop at 45 degrees. Don't push through to show how tough you are.

4. Explain Functional Impact
Explain how your condition affects your job, daily activities, relationships, and sleep.
5. Bring Supporting Documents
Bring copies of recent medical records, medication lists, nexus letters, and your personal statement.
6. Be Honest—But Complete
Never exaggerate, but don't be incomplete either. If you can walk but only for 10 minutes, say that.
7. Request a Copy of the DBQ
Review the DBQ carefully after your exam. If it contains errors, you can submit corrections.
Common C&P Exam Mistakes
- Showing up on a "good day" without explaining your bad days
- Pushing through pain during physical tests
- Being vague about symptoms
- Not explaining how the condition affects your work and life
The Bottom Line
Your C&P exam is one of the most important appointments in the claims process. Prepare like it matters—because it does.
