TDIU: How to Get 100% VA Compensation Without a 100% Rating
"Can't work because of service-connected disabilities? TDIU pays at the 100% rate even if your combined rating is lower. Here's how to qualify."
━━━THE VETERAN'S TAKE━━━
What Is TDIU?
Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) is a VA benefit that pays you at the 100% disability rate even if your combined rating is less than 100%. It's designed for veterans whose service-connected disabilities prevent them from maintaining substantially gainful employment.
TDIU Eligibility Requirements
Schedular TDIU (38 CFR 4.16(a))
You qualify if you have ONE service-connected disability rated at 60% or higher, OR TWO OR MORE service-connected disabilities with a combined rating of 70% or higher (with at least one at 40% or higher), AND you cannot secure substantially gainful employment.
Extraschedular TDIU (38 CFR 4.16(b))
If you don't meet the schedular requirements but still can't work due to service-connected disabilities, the VA can grant TDIU on an extraschedular basis.
