Survivor & Dependent Benefits

If you have lost a loved one who served, there are benefits meant to support you and your family. You do not have to figure this out alone. This page walks through DIC, survivor pensions, and CHAMPVA healthcare at your own pace.

We know this is a difficult time. The information below is here whenever you are ready. Bookmark this page, come back when you need to, and take it one step at a time.

Key Survivor Benefits

DIC (Dependency & Indemnity Compensation)

Monthly tax-free payments for surviving spouses and dependents of veterans who died from service-connected conditions or while on active duty.

  • Requires service-connected death
  • Or 100% P&T at time of death (10+ years)

Survivors Pension

Income-based monthly benefit for unremarried surviving spouses of wartime veterans, regardless of service connection.

  • Income and net worth limits apply
  • Aid & Attendance add-on available

CHAMPVA

Healthcare coverage for spouses and children of veterans who are permanently disabled or died from service-connected conditions.

  • Covers medical, dental, pharmacy
  • No enrollment fee; cost-sharing applies

FWD Assist Note

Eligibility varies. DIC requires service-connected death or specific circumstances. Survivor pension is income-based. CHAMPVA requires the veteran to be rated 100% P&T or deceased from service-connected causes. Each program has its own rules and documentation requirements.

Why This Information Matters

Many surviving spouses and family members are never told about the benefits available to them. The VA does not automatically reach out after a veteran passes. You have to file a claim, and the paperwork can feel overwhelming, especially when you are already grieving.

Knowing what you may be eligible for, what documents to gather, and where to start can make a real difference. These benefits exist because of your loved one's service, and you have every right to claim them when you are ready.
