Time-Sensitive Benefit

Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD)

Fast-track your VA disability claim before you separate from service and receive payments within 30-60 days of your discharge date.

The Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program is one of the most powerful tools available to transitioning service members. This program allows you to file your VA disability claim 90 to 180 days before your separation date, ensuring your claim is processed and ready for payment as soon as you become a veteran.

Unlike standard claims that can take months or even years to process, BDD claims are prioritized by the VA. If you complete all required medical examinations before your discharge, you can receive your first disability payment within 30-60 days of separating from service. This means you won't experience the financial gap that many veterans face during their transition.

The BDD program is available to all service members on full-time active duty, including members of the National Guard and Reserve on active duty orders. However, timing is critical—you must initiate your claim within the 90-180 day window, and you must be available to complete all VA medical examinations before your separation date.

Eligibility Requirements

Active Duty Status

You must be on full-time active duty, including National Guard and Reserve members on active duty orders.

Timing Window

You must file your claim between 90 and 180 days before your anticipated separation, retirement, or release from active duty.

Availability for Exams

You must be available to complete all required VA medical examinations before your separation date.

Known Conditions

You should have knowledge of the medical conditions you plan to claim. Service treatment records must document these conditions.

Important Timing Note

If you file less than 90 days before separation, you won't qualify for BDD but can still use the Quick Start program. If you miss the window entirely, you can file a standard claim after discharge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I miss the BDD filing window?

If you are less than 90 days from separation you can still file through the Quick Start program, though processing will take longer. If you have already separated, you file a standard VA disability claim. You will not lose eligibility, but your first payment will be delayed.

Can National Guard or Reserve members use the BDD program?

Yes, as long as you are on active duty orders and meet the 90-to-180-day timing requirement. You must also be available to complete all C&P exams before your orders end.

How many conditions should I claim in a BDD filing?

Claim every condition that is documented in your service treatment records or that you can support with medical evidence. There is no penalty for filing multiple conditions, and it is much easier to claim them now while you still have access to military medical records.

What if I cannot attend a C&P exam before my separation date?

Contact the VA as soon as possible to reschedule. If you cannot complete all exams before separation, the VA will convert your BDD claim to a standard claim. This delays processing but does not cancel your filing.
