VA Pension: Needs-Based Financial Support

VA Pension is a tax-free monthly benefit for low-income wartime veterans who are age 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled. Unlike disability compensation, VA Pension is based on financial need, not service connection.

Who Qualifies for VA Pension?

You may be eligible for VA Pension if you meet all of these requirements:

Service Requirements

  • At least 90 days of active duty
  • At least one day during a wartime period
  • Discharged under conditions other than dishonorable

Age or Disability

  • Age 65 or older, OR
  • Permanently and totally disabled (not necessarily service-connected)

Income Limits

  • Countable income below VA yearly limits
  • Unreimbursed medical expenses can reduce countable income

Net Worth Limits

  • Net worth must be below VA thresholds
  • Includes assets, property, and investments (excluding primary residence)

Recognized Wartime Periods

You must have served during one of these periods (at least one day):

World War II

December 7, 1941 – December 31, 1946

Korean War

June 27, 1950 – January 31, 1955

Vietnam War

FWD Assist Note

VA Pension vs. Disability Compensation: These are separate benefits. Pension is needs-based (for low-income wartime veterans); disability compensation is based on service-connected conditions. You cannot receive both full payments—VA will pay whichever is higher. Most veterans receive more from disability compensation.

VA Home Loans: Buy Without a Down Payment

The VA Home Loan benefit is one of the most valuable programs available to veterans, active-duty service members, and eligible surviving spouses.

Zero Down Payment

Buy a home with no money down—100% financing available for eligible veterans.

No PMI Required

Save hundreds per month—VA loans don't require private mortgage insurance.

Competitive Interest Rates

VA-backed loans typically offer lower interest rates than conventional mortgages.

Who Can Use a VA Home Loan?

  • Veterans who meet minimum service requirements
  • Active-duty service members (after 90 continuous days of service)
  • National Guard and Reserve members (after 6 years of service)
  • Surviving spouses of service members who died in service or from service-connected disabilities

To get started, request your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) through VA.gov or through your lender.

Additional Financial Assistance Programs

Beyond pension and home loans, veterans have access to emergency financial support, grants, and assistance programs.

Emergency Financial Assistance

Local VA medical centers, veteran service organizations, and county programs may offer emergency aid for housing, utilities, or essential needs.

Housing Grants for Disabled Veterans

Veterans with service-connected disabilities may qualify for Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) or Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grants to modify their homes.
